Say e tell sono entrambi verbi relativi alla comunicazione ma hanno usi e significati differenti. Se non sai quali sono, niente paura: oggi imparerai come impiegare queste due parole nel discorso indiretto!
To Say: quando si usa?
- Quando si dice qualcosa.
E.g. She said that the meeting was cancelled.
- Di solito con il discorso diretto.
E.g. Laura said “Hello Andy, how are you today?”
E.g. Adam said “I love you”.
Ricorda: To Say non è mai immediatamente seguito da un pronome.
È scorretto dire: Anna said me that she was angry.
To Tell: quando si usa?
- Quando si dice qualcosa a qualcuno.
E.g. He told me that the meeting was cancelled.
E.g. Adam told Carrie that he loved her.
- To tell si usa nel discorso indiretto per dare ordini o istruzioni
E.g. She told him to stop talking during class.
E.g. The boss told us the project needs to be finished today.
Ricorda: To Tell è di solito seguito da un pronome (me, you, him, etc).
E.g. Anna told me she was hungry.
E.g. I always tell him that he should find a new job.
